Questions o The assignment consists of following three (3) questions: Question 1 Analysis of a Journal Article (e.g., see Chapters 1, 15, and 16) Find a social science-based research article in a peer-reviewed journal, and discuss the following questions (note, your answer should be two to three double-spaced pages and include the article’s abstract): 1. What is the purpose of the study? 2. What theory or theories are used in guiding this study? 3. Which research method is used in the article? 4. 6. Is there a good relationship between theory and method? 7. How would this study differ if it utilized a different method (i.e., utilized quantitative methodology rather than qualitative methodology or vice versa)? 8. In your opinion how could this study have been improved? Explain. 9. Give an overall evaluation of the value of this study. Question 2 Validity and Reliability (e.g., see Chapter 4) Write a two- or three-page paper outlining a hypothesis, the concepts (variables) to be measured, and how they will be measured. Specifically: 1. Come up with a causal statement that involves two variables, e.g., “Being a victim of ageism affects one’s self-esteem.”

2. Provide a nominal and an operational definition for each variable (in this example, “victim of ageism” and “self-esteem”). 3. Explain how each operational definition has face validity. 4. Explain, giving concrete examples, how concurrent, construct, and convergent validity could be established for both of the operationalizations proposed in point (b). 5. Explain, giving concrete examples, how the operationalizations could be tested for reliability. 6. Describe a methodologically sound way in which participants could be selected for the study. 7. Describe the extent to which the study would have external validity, in particular the extent to which the findings could be generalized to people who were not studied.

Question 3 Creating a Quantitative Questionnaire (e.g., see Chapter 5) Create a structured interview schedule (i.e., Questionnaire) of 10 questions you would ask fellow university students about their study habits; specifically, address the following research question: “What are the study habits of highly effective (high grade point average) university students?” Also, write a one-page introductory statement, including all relevant details (e.g., how the potential respondents were selected, how confidentiality will be maintained, etc.) for this interview. Keep the following in mind: • The population (first year, second year, etc.); • Ethical considerations in undertaking research from this method; https://youtu.be/_8R6ScVauXQ

General rules of thumb for writing good questions, such as: keep the research question in mind at all times (ask yourself “exactly what do I want to know?”), avoid ambiguous terms/leading questions, and pay attention to the presentation/ordering of questions. Structure o Each answer must be written in essay-style format and should be about three double-spaced pages. Hence, the assignment in total should be eight to nine pages in length (i.e., 3 questions * 3 pages = 9 pages). This is an approximate length, and answers may vary. o Page 1 of the assignment must include your student name/number. Each answer must be numbered (e.g., Question 1) .

The organization of the answer is much less important than the content. The only requirement is that each answer is written in an essay-style format (i.e., no point form/short-sentences). o It may be helpful to use subheadings to help organize your answer. For example, a given answer might be divided into three sections: Introduction, Analysis, Conclusion. However, it is not necessary to structure your answer as such. Furthermore, some questions, namely Question 3, are not conducive to this format. o It is important to again emphasize that the organization or length of the answer is not necessarily important.

The content/substance of the answer will mainly determine the mark! o References/bibliography are not necessary because this assignment is based on questions from the textbook. Note that a bibliography must be included (at the end of each answer) if any reference(s) outside of the course textbook is cited in the answer. Any standard referencing style can be used.
