Paper details Analyze a couple of chapters out of the book using articles from the course. Compare the chapters of the book to the articles by applying the concepts from the readings to the chapters. Keep in mind that because they are different genres, it may be difficult to compare in a straightforward way—the articles have arguments whereas the book will have themes. But you can certainly discuss these in light of one another and compare the argument being made in an article to the way topic is portrayed in the chapter.

Pedagogical purpose: Novels provide a rich depth of characters, settings, and interactions that reflect the author’s assumptions about what the author thinks is or could be true in the world. This includes how gender is expressed, negotiated, contested, and structured. Analyzing a novel can help make abstract concepts concrete by taking what you have learned in class and applying those concepts and perspectives onto the book. Produce a creative and/or scholarly project about the gender themes in the book, connecting them to class concepts. IMPORTANT NOTE: None of these novels were written with gender as a scholarly concept in mind. Gender as a concept will be more or less present/obvious, depending on the book.

This assignment asks you to think about how gender is portrayed and enacted even when it is not the “subject” of the book. The final project should apply one or more course concepts to the novel you read and convey them to your audience in a creative or scholarly way. If you wish, you may write a paper with the same specifications as outlined in the film analysis assignment. Evaluation: Projects will be assessed as either A, B, C, or F. A: Project shows that student engaged critically with the book, applied at least one course concept accurately and with depth, and clearly conveyed their ideas to the reader/listener/viewer. B: Project shows that student applied one or more class concepts at least at a surface level and conveyed their ideas in a way that could be understood by a reader/listener/viewer. C: Project covers the book but does not adequately incorporate any class concepts or does so inaccurately. Ideas are not clearly communicated. F: No project or project shows that student had not read the book.
