COVID-19 Inequity.
Reflective essays are our attempt to think something through by writing about it and to share our thinking with others. Your goal is to explore your current positionality during this pandemic in a way that will interest others but also to make a connection between your personal experience to a bigger societal scope. Although the format and order of the essay is up to you, it should still be intentional and make sense in progression. You want to leave readers feeling that the journey was important, interesting, and profitable in that they walk away with a significant feeling or charge of action.

Reflect on how you are “surviving” this COVID-19 pandemic. Interpret the word “surviving” however you like. Some suggestions of examples (but not limited to) are: I live in a multi-generational household and we do not have the luxury of space to properly social distance. The virus spread quickly and I lost 3 family members within the same month. I just had a baby and this is my mother’s first and only grandchild. However, my mother has cancer and lives in another state where she receives treatments. We don’t know how much longer she has but we also don’t want to risk traveling to then infect her with the coronavirus.

We FaceTime almost everyday and I hope my mom will be able to hold my baby soon. Because my classes were all on-line, I was able to have the flexibility of time to get a job. I feel blessed to be able to finish my degree sooner than expected and work full-time to save money. Since my family all works in the medical field, we were able to get the vaccine quickly. I feel grateful. As an Asian American, I feel I am living multiple pandemics – a medical pandemic and a racial pandemic. https://youtu.be/NiFdVROIqX4

My family’s restaurant was set on fire so now we are in debt. We are all working minimum wage jobs now to pay for my grandparents’ medical expenses. Whether it is COVID-19, or a hate crime, or losing our apartment – I am wrecked with anxiety of the future. We live in an area with bad WiFi access. I had to help my little twin sisters with their online school which caused my own grades to slip. Now I might not graduate on time and I haven’t told my mom yet.
